1986. That's when the Electronic Communications Privacy Act was passed. 4 years before the World Wide Web was created. 8 years before Amazon.com was founded. 14 years before Google got started. And almost 2 decades before Facebook launched.
Not surprisingly, this law - and other laws designed to protect the privacy of online information - are badly out of date and provide questionable protection at best for Internet users. And as the Internet and new technology assume ever-greater roles in our lives, we need to provide real protection so that users can take advantage of new products and services without sacrificing their civil liberties and the ability to retain control of their own information.
